Collaborative project: Innovative model approaches for improved nitrogen use efficiency and lowered GHG-emission in oilseed rape production systems - subproject 2 (ModelLowN)

Project

Project code: 281B200216
Contract period: 15.08.2018 - 14.08.2021
Budget: 153,963 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: digital world, oil and fibre plants, emissions, fertilization, climate (climate relevance, climate protection, climate change), crop production, rape seed, cultivation, ressource sensitive plantbreeding

The objective of ModelLowN was to improve the N- and GHG-balance of future winter oilseed rape varieties as a contribution to meeting the goals of the Climate Change Plan. Test hybrids resulting from crossing a microNAM population with two testers were used to study N-efficiency. Conventional and sensor-based phenotyping and environmental data were collected in 2-year and multi-site field trials under "low N" and coupled with genotyping data to achieve stepwise, hypothesis-driven modeling of yield of populations and derived test hybrids. Genotypically parameterized process models were used to generate trait hypotheses. Basic principles for multispectral, drone-based field phenotyping in rapeseeed were developed. The developed genotypes and prediction models will be implemented in practice in the future to accelerate the breeding of high-yielding varieties with a better N- and GHG-balance.
