Budget: 169,518 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: digital world, sensor technology, climate (climate relevance, climate protection, climate change), grassland, moor, soil (soil conservation, soil fertility, soil cultivation, soil health), monitoring

"The project network „BEWAMO“ developed together with professional authorities an assessment method of agricultural used organic soils in consideration of abatement costs for greenhouse gases. Besides the peat depth the main impact factor of the carbon pools and release potential is the drainage depth. For a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions from organic soils a rewetting, partially or complete, is more important than an extensification of the grassland utilization. The success of rewetting measures depends on the degradation of the organic soils, the available amount of water and the infrastructural control capabilities. The water and soil associations are the most important players for the implementation of these measures and have to be strengthened institutionally.
The economic consequences of the interviewed companies depend on the company type and the possibilities to compensate for ceasing forage area. For an large-scale soil moisture monitoring supported by remote sensing we developed methods for direct and indirect determining of soil moisture in the topsoil, based on Sentinel-1-Data."
