Collaborative project: Reduction of methane and nitrogen emissions in milk production by innovative control and management of feeding - subproject 1 (ReMissionDairy)

Project

Project code: 281B100116
Contract period: 15.08.2018 - 14.08.2021
Budget: 135,616 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: animal husbandry, climate change, emission analysis, development of algorithms

ReMissionDairy has focussed on establishing continuous controlling of feeding for dairy farms that can be widely applied. The new tools help individual farmers to identify and utilize potential to optimize the impact of milk production on climate and environment and to improve resource efficiency. Modern milk analysis is providing the basis because spectral data generated by middle-infrared spectroscopy are used to determine methane emission and efficiency metrics. The established reporting system of the dairy sector is strengthened by new web applications that make data on the metabolic status of the cows, methane emission and feeding efficiency accessible. This implies targeted support of optimized feeding management accounting for nutritional and ruminant health requirements as well as the needs of milk production with regard to climate, environment and responsible use of resources. Knowledge and practice transfer are promoted through the e-learning which uses the results of the project to show how controlling of feeding can valuably contribute to mitigate emissions, improve production efficiency and increase sustainability of milk production.
