MIXEd livestock farming for improved sustaiNABiLity and robustnEss of organic livestock. Coordination (MIX-ENABLE)

Project

Project code: 2817OE009
Contract period: 01.04.2018 - 31.03.2021
Budget: 143,984 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: animal husbandry, pigs, sustainability, poultry, cattle, husbandry techniques, production, resistance, animal health

We hypothesize that limited integration among farm components prevents organic mixed livestock farms from most of the above-mentioned multiple potential benefits. Accordingly, the main aim of MIX-ENABLE is to produce new knowledge on how to manage organic mixed livestock farms in Europe towards sustainability and robustness in response to climatic and economic variability. More specific objectives are the following: - Characterize organic mixed livestock farms in Europe, in particular their level of integration between farm components. - Assess the sustainability of organic mixed livestock farms and their robustness to adverse events, and relate it to their level of integration between farm components. - Compare the sustainability and robustness of specialized and mixed livestock farms. - Integrate the knowledge developed on organic mixed livestock farms in models that can simulate their sustainability and robustness in response to climatic and economic variability. - Co-design with farmers more integrated, sustainable and robust organic mixed livestock farms or pathways from specialized towards organic mixed livestock farms. The project includes the following work packages: WP 1: Project Coordination. WP 2: Characterization of organic mixed livestock farms in Europe. WP 3: Integrated assessment of organic mixed livestock farms in Europe. WP 4: Farm-level experiments in organic mixed livestock systems. WP 5: Modelling and co-design of more integrated organic mixed livestock farms. WP 6: Stakeholder engagement, compilation and dissemination of results. Forschungsring is engaged with these tasks: WP 2: Acquisition of 40 farms in Germany, and data collection on these farms. WP 3: Contribute to the assessment of the assessment methodology and the indicator system. Application of the indicator system and assessment of the participating German farms. WP 5: Organize, conduct and evaluate participatory modeling workshops (including the elaboration of a scientific paper on the process and outcomes). WP 6: Identify, map and contact agricultural consultants with competence in organic mixed lifestock farming in the participating countries.
