Purpose of research: Basic research

Infectious diseases in young animals are a major cause of morbidity and mortality and this increased susceptibility is especially pronounced in domestic species such as the pig that receive their passively acquired immunity postnatally. Gastrointestinal disturbances immediately post-weaning cause large economic losses in the pig industry. Within the pig population total loses of all those born in the EU amount to ~17% and a significant proportion of these can be associated with infections via mucosal surfaces.
