The objective of WinEffizient was to increase drought stress tolerance and nitrogen use efficiency of winter wheat in an optimized crop rotation system. For this purpose, in several steps, a trait donor for increased root growth was first crossed with European elite varieties and the F1 cross products were then backcrossed to generate near-isogenic lines (NILs). The initial material was tested in different variants of a crop rotation sequence with respect to water and N-uptake in multi-site field trials and three nitrogen fertilization strategies. Furthermore, to better understand N-uptake under drought stress, the starting material as well as the NILs were studied within two container trials. The obtained results should help to achieve higher stable yields with lower nitrogen application and under drier growing conditions. The results contribute to an overall concept for a more environmentally friendly wheat production and further provide new knowledge for breeding of resilient lines.
