Responsiveness of powdery mildew (PM; Erysiphe necator) resistant grapevine cultivars and breeding lines (Vitis spec.) against genetically diverse North American PM isolates for future breeding programs
Project
Project code: JKI-ZR-08-5226
Contract period: 01.02.2019
- 31.01.2020
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: grapevine resistance breeding, powdery mildew, genetic diversity,
The aim of the intended collaboration between the Julius Kühn-Institute, Institute for Grapevine Breeding, Geilweilerhof, Germany and the USDA ARS Grape Genetics Research Unit, 630 N. West St. Geneva, NY, USA is to test the potential of natural genetic resistances against powdery mildew used in grapevine resistance breeding programs. Therefore, two already known and widely used resistances together with yet uncharacterized resistances were chosen to be evaluated with the genetic diversity of North American Erysiphe necator isolates, the causal agent of grapevine powdery mildew. For the two well know resistances, Ren3 and Ren9 were chosen, which were first described in the interspecific grapevine cultivar ‘Regent’ on chromosome 15. Here a test of the resistances in combination or alone will elucidate an already hinted additive effect. The yet unknown resistances have been observed in F1-individuals from crossings of Vitis amurensis and Vitis quinguangularis (two Asian wild grapevine species) with Vitis vinifera the domesticated grapevine which is used for wine, table grape and raisin production world-wide. For future resistance breeding programs, it is crucial to accurately characterize resistances and their potential as the process of grapevine breeding is time consuming. Therefore, it is important to test new resistances with the whole genetic diversity of a pathogen to evaluate their durability at the beginning of the breeding process.
