Especially in cold seasons existing ventilation systems in curtain-sided barns pose challenges to turkey fatteners. To ensure a sufficient amount of fresh air inflow the curtains of the barns have to be opened, which is also the case during cold and wet weather. Therefore using this gravitational forced ventilation, the cold, humid air gets directly to the turkeys, resulting in a higher risk for respiratory diseases and wet litter. Within this project, a consortium of turkey fatteners, consultants and scientists will test the application of an innovative ventilation system for curtain-sided barns. The aim is a reduction of an inflow of cold air maintaining adequate climate in the barn. Therefore, existing ventilation systems in curtain-sided barns should be modified. In a second step watering bars should be installed to create a larger resting area for the turkeys. This restructuring of the inner stable room contributes to a reduction of the area with high water input and therefore is expected to reduce the risk of wet litter.
