Practical trials of surgical castration of piglets under anesthesia and postoperative pain elimination using Procain, Isofluran and Ketamin / Azaperon (Ferkelkastration)
Project
Project code: 2817MDT114
Contract period: 01.06.2018
- 30.09.2019
Budget: 37,242 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development
Keywords: pigs, knowledge transfer, networking, animal welfare, prevention
The aim of the project is to evaluate the different methods of surgical piglet castration under anesthesia and postoperative pain treatment on farms with conventional piglet production and different group sizes and to evaluate their application under practical conditions. The three procedures are carried out on the same farm. Each work step is recorded in detail, both in terms of time and the technical operational execution. After completion of the trial phase, a comprehensive economic evaluation is carried out for each individual procedure. All results are going to be summarized and freely accessible for the public in the form of guidelines with practice-oriented instructions, short instructional films and an Excel-based tool, the so-called 'farm-specific decision support aid'. This should help the farmer to make decisions regarding this important innovative step.
