Collaborative project: Utilization of the data from the project optiKuh for improvement of dairy farming by an updated modelling of feed intake and use of feed efficiency and robustness in animal breeding and management of animal health. Subproject 1 (optiKuh2)

Project

Project code: 2819113219
Contract period: 01.09.2019 - 31.05.2021
Budget: 165,837 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: animal health, animal nutrition, prevention, milk, cattle, animal breeding

Politics and society request innovations improving livestock farming regarding animal welfare und negative environmental impact. The collaborative project optiKuh2 uses the existing data set of the project optiKuh (12 experimental farms) for advanced analyses of feed intake, feed efficiency and metabolic health in dairy cows and supports practical applications directly. The feed intake prediction models of Gruber et al. (2004) - common in both practice and research - are updated as well as the involved feeding programs. Various efficiency traits were analyzed regarding selected influencing factors. A further progress was achieved in the selection on feed intake and feed efficiency by analyzing the genetic relationships between efficiency, feed intake, energy balance and health traits. A management app for dairy farms was developed. It allows a cow-individual management and improves animal health and animal welfare by evaluating the individual risk of disease.
