Cultivation of figs is not common in germany. Figs are usually imported from mediterranean countries, especially from turkey, and are sold mainly dried or fresh. Consumers prefer high quality and in particular fresh figs. The quality of domestic german grown figs can often be better than the imported fresh product. Therefore, the consumer demand for local produced figs is considered to be highly positive. Because of ongoing climate change, with rising mean annual temperatures, fig production could become an interesting fresh fruit opportunity for growers in Baden-Württemberg. This project will examine different production requirements for protected cropping of figs( e.g. plastic foil covered tunnels, unused greenhouses) and also outdoor planted  fig orchards. In addition, the marketing of fresh figs in food retailing will be supported. Project partners covering the whole value chain from fruit production, scientific institutions, fruit cooperatives and a food retailer are participating on this new development.
