Development of a guideline for successful milk production by cow-dependent calf rearing
Project
Project code: EIP-Agri-SH-2018-LPTT
Contract period: 01.01.2018
- 31.12.2020
Budget: 345,240 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: farming, practice/activity, animal husbandry
The aim of the project is the development of a tool that supports milk producers in the introduction and further development of the process of 'cow-dependent calf rearing' on their own farms. This includes calf rearing by using suckler cows and nurse cows. In the end action guidelines and an internet-based consulting tool should be available for doing so. The effects of cow-dependent calf rearing on the health of cows and cattle will be studied by accompanying data collection and evaluation on the practical farms. The insights gained in the project regarding farm surveys, scientific analyses and stable school discussions are processed and summarized in a practical way. The prototype of the guidelines is tested, evaluated and improved by the companies involved. The final version of the guidelines will be published and made available as an online tool. In addition, a homepage will be created that serves as a platform for all people interested in learning about and exchanging information on the breeding system of the 'cow-dependent calf rearing'.
