Purpose of research: Applied research

The need for fresh organic vegetables in northern Hesse cannot be covered by regional cultivation. Various difficulties in terms of climate, farming practices, availability of seasonal labor, and processing structures complicate the integration of agricultural enterprises in this segment. The main objective of the project is to establish a regional value chain for organically grown fine vegetables, which is created through the cooperation of 3 partnership groups. An innovative approach of the project is to integrate the fine vegetable cultivation into the agricultural crop rotation. Typically, fine vegetables are grown in nurseries that are hardly established in northern Hesse. In order to serve the potential sales, various innovative concepts are developed and tested for their suitability for practical use. This includes labor organization, cultivation of site-adapted species, special counseling modules and job creation for people with disabilities. For the workshop workers of the Hephata Diakonie, the project enables a new meaningful activity and thus a further step of inclusion.
