CycleTest - Developing an advanced load cycle test for automatically charged wood boilers to assess real life performance - subproject 2: Development, theoretical and experimental investigation (cycletest)

Project

Project code: 22038918
Contract period: 01.07.2019 - 30.06.2022
Budget: 677,652 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: solid energy ressources, pellets, wood chips, renewable ressources, emissions, ressource management

Based on previous research, the cycle test project develops a test stand method for evaluating efficiency and pollutant emissions of automatically charged boilers which apply pellets or wood chips as fuel. The method is based on a load cycle which shall proportionally reflect all load levels of a typical user pattern in a full year. In opposition to the testing procedure as defined in the European Standard DIN EN 303-5, the new procedure allows a more realistic boiler evaluation. A testing handbook is elaborated which not only describes the load cycle procedure but shall also specify the measurement methods and provide a common data evaluation tool. Furthermore, the choice and required properties of the test fuels used shall be specified in order to ensure largely comparable results. In a second step, the new test method is evaluated by experienced test laboratories in a round robin, in this phase the feasibility and reproducibility of the method are assessed and adjusted if required. The newly developed method shall serve as testing basis for a new certification scheme for small scale wood boilers. This certification scheme shall enable manufacturers of advanced boilers to prove their high level of efficiency in real-life applications while at the same time low pollutant emissions under realistic user conditions are also documented. Planers, installers, energy and funding agencies shall thus be provided a possibility for proper boiler identification or for depicting certain advanced boiler technologies towards advisors, municipalities or end consumers. Towards the end of the project duration, communication strategies shall be elaborated to attract boiler manufacturers to have outstanding products certified and to explain the new method and the certification approach to the above mentioned target groups. Representatives of these target groups are also integrated at early stage in a project council, which shall accompany the method and certificate development.
