Collaborative project: Development of a technological chain for the material utilization of hop plants - pre-project: technical feasibility

Project

Project code: 2219NR009
Contract period: 01.04.2019 - 30.06.2020
Budget: 76,334 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: hops, renewable ressources

For the first time, the scientific and technical prerequisites for the development of a technological chain for the material use of hop plants are to be determined and tested with the preliminary project. So far, after harvesting and stationary extraction of the cones (as value-giving plant components), the hop plants have either been left uncrushed or chopped, mainly in the fields, or abandoned to uncontrolled natural degradation. The hop vines, which can be up to 6 m long, represent a considerable biomass potential for material use that has not been exploited to date. In the preliminary project, the basic technical feasibility of selected technical utilisation routes for hop plants or stems and the intermediates obtained from them will be examined as examples. On the basis of this and an initial market assessment, it is planned to examine the favoured utilisation route(s) in more detail in a follow-up project and to work out the prerequisites for implementation on an industrial scale.
