Project code: FLI-IVD-08-Ri-0726
Contract period: 01.01.2020 - 31.12.2021
Purpose of research: Experimental development
Keywords: BVD monitoring, tracer, Milch, ELISA

The German BVD regulation was revised in 2016. On the one hand, some deadlines were shortened, and on the other hand, the possibility of serological monitoring via milk serology or spot testing of young animals was allowed in addition to the mandatory direct virus detection. Therefore, serological methods have to be evaluated in pilot studies regarding their suitability for BVD monitoring to assess how these methods may be used when the German BVD control program progresses from eradication to surveillance. Milk samples represent a sample material that is easy to collect and which is already used in monitoring programs for further cattle diseases in Germany. In this project, the suitability of milk samples in combination with currently available commercial BVD antibody ELISAs is evaluated. Furthermore, suitable pool sizes are experimentally determined and the influence of herd structures on the BVD antibody prevalence of cattle herds is investigated.
