The German bee monitoring is a long-term cohort study that monitors the same group of about 1,200 honeybee colonies over a longer period, whereat particular parameters are systematically measured, observed and surveyed by the same methods. These parameters include beekeeping management, current bee pathogens including invasive parasites, honey analysis including site-specific pattern of collected pollen and residue analysis including nearly all compounds relevant for plant protection and Varroa treatment. Using the estimates of colony development, honey yields and winter losses of individual monitoring colonies retrospective correlation analysis can be performed. Contrary to exclusive experimental research, this monitoring project focus on a continuously long-term documentation of the above parameter as a prerequisite for statistical analysis on interactions of pathogens, environment, beekeeping management and honey bee health. The here established database provides essential information on the distribution of known pathogens and the spread of invasive honey bee parasites. Such knowledge is an essential requirement for both, the implementation of legislation on honey bee pests, and for a sustainable guidance of the beekeepers, not only to avoid total colony losses but also to preserve and maintain vital honeybee colonies.
