Collaborative project: Fast flowering in winter wheat by vernalization-independent induction of spike formation - subproject 5 (FASTFLOW)

Project

Project code: 2818402ENZ
Contract period: 01.04.2020 - 31.03.2023
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: wheat, crop production, biotechnology

The FASTFLOW project aims at shortening the time needed per generation in the context of winter wheat breeding by overcoming the requirement for cold- and shortday-induced vernalization, which will significantly accelerate breeding progress. The methods to be developed are based on the treatment of seedlings with technically produced active substances, whose natural counterparts are known to trigger the transition from vegetative to generative plant development. The vernalisation phase at temperatures just above the freezing point, which takes about two months per generation of winter wheat to complete, thus becomes obsolete, saving costs and above all time.
