Development and establishment of a multi-level animal health management for farms with New World camelids (Animal protection New world Camelids)

Project

Project code: 2819MDT180
Contract period: 01.06.2020 - 31.05.2022
Budget: 265,277 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: animal husbandry, knowledge transfer, networking, husbandry techniques, other animal species

The number of animals for new world camelids (alpaca, llama) in German hobby farms and part-time and full-time agricultural farms has been increasing for several years. Often, New World Camelids (NWC) are used as alternative grazing animals, which in principle can be implemented well, but in some cases place high demands on the expertise of animal keepers, which are different compared to classic grazing animals. With regard to the knowledge of animal health and animal welfare in the keeping of these animal species - which are also considered agricultural livestock in Germany - the owners often rely on the exchange among themselves and less on the technical recommendations or advice from proven experts. This fact is made clear, among other things, by the fact that animal welfare violations in connection with the keeping of NWC occur due to ignorance. It should also be noted that veterinary training can still be optimized with regard to NWC. In the past, this meant that only a few experts were available to NWC as contact persons for questions about animal health and animal welfare. In the present project, a multi-stage procedure is to systematically record and evaluate the Germany-wide situation regarding animal protection, animal welfare and animal health in farms holding NWC. Afterwards, the best possible animal health plan for NWC farms is drawn up, as well as various learning and teaching materials that can be used online or at face-to-face events. The aim is to ensure that knowledge about the core competency of applicants is bundled and made available to all interested groups in order to improve animal health at NWC in the future.
