A uniform assessment and species-appropriate optimization of sport- and leisure-horse husbandries considering environmental criteria is deemed urgently required. However, till today there is no objective assessment tool available, that is both scientifically sound as well as feasible. Aim of the project 'BestTUPferd' is to establish a digital consulting tool for horse-keeping farms. The concept for this assessment tool was developed at the Technical University Munich- Weihenstephan from 2013 until 2017 in the course of a project 'for the evaluation of animal welfare and environmental effects of horse husbandries'. The proposed tool is planned to be utilized nationly. With the aid of a new company that is yet-to-be-established it is planned to launch a consulting tool, which allows the assessment of animal welfare and environmental effects of different single and group housing systems for horses. The software, that can be used on any hand-held device, will allow a standardized deficiency analysis in the field and as a results give optimization advice individual to any farm. Target, guide and limit value for a benchmarking-system will be calculated and determined. With the aid of this consulting tool the housing conditions of horses as well as the protection of the environment in horse-keeping could be substantially improved Germany-wide. The project is supported by an expert advisory board, which comprises representatives from important institutions of the horse sector, who, amongst others, will promote the implementation and distribution of the assessment system.
