Keeping laying hens in mobile houses is an animal friendly and environmental sound alternative to static housing systems. However, in mobile houses currently used in the field, there are still considerable deficits and uncertainties concerning general hygienic measures, such as cleaning and disinfection. This is also the case regarding preventive biosecurity measures, and legal measures to be taken in the event of an outbreak of a transmissible disease, for instance the obligation to keep poultry indoors. The aim of this project is to develop a concept consisting of modified mobile house and elements for retrofitting existing stables, and a management package focusing on general and specific hygienic measures. This concept should account for present regulations on transmissible animal diseases as well as for animal welfare and environmental protection. Therefore, investigations on animal health, animal behaviour, and animal - and environmental hygiene are carried out by closely linked expert working groups under practical conditions at two trial sites. In addition, these investigations will take place under a simulated obligation to keep the flocks indoors. Thus, the evaluation and the continuous refinement of the concept are ensured throughout the entire project phase. This approach addresses current challenges in mobile poultry housing in order to develop and establish a sustainable legally compliant hygiene management system with special regard to animal welfare and environmental protection.
