Project code: 2816PROC01
Contract period: 15.10.2017 - 31.01.2021
Budget: 774,262 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: global food security, energy efficiency, local supply, food pattern, value chains, food security, processing, nutrition education, food quality, information technology, communication technology, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Nigeria

Worldwide, annual food losses amount to 1.3 billion tonnes. This corresponds to one third of total production, i.e. an economic loss of about US$ 750bn (FAO, 2011). In addition, the limited natural resources are significantly damaged. Losses are particularly high in rarely used crops with high nutritional value. At the same time, more than two billion people worldwide suffer from malnutrition (FAO, 2013). In sub-Saharan Africa, women of childbearing age, infants and young children up to 5 years of age are particularly affected by malnutrition with all its serious consequences. The consortium research project UPGRADE Plus - Subproject 1, aims at improving the nutrition of women, infants and young children based on three case studies (Ghana, Nigeria, Sierra Leone) and at the same time creating opportunities for income generation with a focus on women's self-help groups in West Africa. The following aspects will be investigated in detail: the development of locally adapted, modular and decentralised processing units based on renewable energies; the processing of previously rarely used but high quality crops to produce innovative food products with a high nutritional value and long shelf life (increasing added value and reducing losses); the training of women, especially pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers to improve the nutritional situation of children through adequate micronutrient supply; the dissemination of the project results through the training of local craftsmen to copy the developed technology on site, and the dissemination of the post-harvest processes developed by training selected women's self-help groups in food processing.
