Collaborative project: Developing of a central online-analyzing and steering unit for milk production 'OASE' – Subproject 1

Project

Project code: 2813300407
Contract period: 01.02.2008 - 31.01.2011
Budget: 382,492 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development

Gentle milking by quarter-individual milking systems reduces udder problems and results in economic advantages for the dairy industry. The objective of the project was to compare two milking systems (conventional and quarter-individual) with regard to their physiological effects on dairy cow. The characteristic of MultiLactor® is the single tube system of milk tubes in contrast to conventional milking clusters. This could help to reduce udder diseases and improve the interaction between udder health and milking technique. The effect of this was tested on a farm experiment. Furthermore the new prototype of such a quarter-individual milking system is able to control the vacuum application at the teat end individually for each udder quarter. By measuring different milk flow traits, milk content and udder health parameter it has been found that the MultiLactor® has a positive effect on udder health. In a further step the vacuum at the teat end was individually and fully automatic adapted to the needs of the dairy cow.
