Collaborative project: Development of standardized screening procedures in order to identify and assess genotypes of ornamental plants tolerant to drought stress - sub-project 3
Project
Project code: 2814305007
Contract period: 14.04.2008
- 30.06.2011
Budget: 88,187 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development
Four ornamental plant breeders and two research facilities have jointly worked to develop a screening concept for selecting drought-tolerant ornamental plant genotypes. The plants undergo a trial cultivation: young plants are raised with irregular water supply, several dehydration/rehydration cycles as well as outdoor trials in rainproof containers. In parallel the rapidity of the wilt progression, the ability for regeneration when rehydrated and the stomata management have been analysed. Among the considered criteria, fresh-weight build-up and flower formation under stress as well as wilting progress were found to have an incidence, i.e. proved suitable as selectors. Under outdoor conditions, interactions between drought and radiation stress have to be accounted for. Other laboratory methods were also analysed for potential use in accelerated screening.
