Project code: BFH-V-02-1.1
Contract period: 01.01.2004 - 30.04.2006
Purpose of research: Applied research

The price difference of around $ 300,- per t between dissolving pulps and paper pulps has initiated a research project for selective removal of hemicelluloses out of paper pulps. In such a process hemicelluloses should be obtained in a form sufficiently attractive for commercial utilisation. A series of solvents like NMMO, Cuen, DMA/LiCl and Nitren have been tested for their ability to increase the a-cellulose content of paper pulps. This goal was successful with nitrene, a 1:1 complex of tris(2-aminoethyl)amine and nickel-II-hydroxide. Nitrene forms relatively stabile olate complexes with diolen, e.g. sugar alcohols, which is the reason why nitrene is capable for solubilizing polysaccharides. In this project the production of dissolving pulps by extraction of hemicelluloses from paper pulps with nitrene will be systematically optimised. The products will be recovered in a scale, which allows test acetylations of the pulps and the production of new functional polymers from hemicelluloses.
