Development and investigation of hydrophobic and coloured wood for decorative outdoor applications
Project
Project code: BFH-IV-02-4.10
Contract period: 01.07.2003
- 30.06.2009
Purpose of research: Applied research
The objective of this research activity is to generate a durable and coloured material from softwood for decorative applications in wood panel constructions by the use of hydrophobation and pigment coating. This project also aims at harnessing such a material as soon as possible to the timber industry. A new, biocide free process for hydrophobation of solid wood will be developed by application of pigments, synthesised and natural waxes and fats from sustainable agriculture. For this reason the product safety of wood applied in decorative outdoor use ought to be assured for the environment and the end-consumer due to the substitution of biocide containing wood preservatives by a novel protection effect by hydrophobation, which leads to a risk prevention regarding the inserted chemicals and their production processes. Methods for the quantitative risk assessment of the new products will be developed. Along with this, the competitive position of the timber industry will be improved.
