Collaborative project: Selection of testbulls of German Braunvieh using genomically enhanced breeding values - PAGeS – Subproject 3

Project

Project code: 2813502008
Contract period: 16.09.2009 - 15.09.2012
Budget: 81,084 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development

PAGeS aims at the development of a routinely applicable breeding value estimation following the principles of genomic selection. In a first step 1,000 progeny tested AI-sires with reliable breeding values will be genotyped with the Illumina 50k-Chip by the project partner Tierzuchtforschung e.V.. In order to enlarge the set of bulls for the derivation of genomic selection equations, available bulls from other Braunvieh populations (Austria, Switzerland, Italy) will be included. Results from genotyping will then be used for derivation of genomic selection equations by the Institute of Animal Breeding of the Bavarian State Research Center for Agriculture. The feasability of genomic selection has basically been shown by international projects and publications. Data and results from the project and from future genotyping will be loaded in the Bavarian genomic database which will be adapted by the project partner LKV Bayern e.V. to accommodate large amounts of genomic data. As a major result of the project we will provide a new method to select bulls and cows already as calves for breeding purposes. In order to exploit the enhanced possibilities for selection we will investigate new approaches for the design of breeding programs in Braunvieh cattle.
