Assessment of the suitability of potato varieties for organic farming

Project

Project code: 2809OE002
Contract period: 01.04.2009 - 31.12.2011
Budget: 60,215 Euro
Purpose of research: Inventory & Assessment

This project aims to complement the information on potato varieties published by the Federal Plant Variety Office (FPVO) and tries to identify and examine further important agronomic variety characteristics for organic potato production. The gained knowledge is very useful for extension workers and organic potato growers. The collaborators in this project have been carrying out potato variety field trials over many years, and commonly analyzed and discussed their results in order to give balanced recommendations on the suitability of potato varieties under organic farming conditions in the respective regions. The project comprises an extended approach by the University of Kassel and intends to cooperate closely with the FPVO. On 7 sites in 6 federal states, variety trials with the same varieties of different maturity groups shall be carried out in fields that have been managed according to the regulations for organic farming for many years. Management and ratings for selected crop characteristics will be carried out according to a uniform concept for all seven sites. The field trials will be placed in the usual position within the crop rotation of the respective sites. Seed potatoes will obtain from one single lot, but pre-sprouted at the farms themselves. The 4 harvests will be conducted in regular intervals agreed upon by all collaborators. Selected tuber samples of the storage varieties from all sites will be stored under practical conditions at the Potato Research Station in Dethlingen. The tuber quality and the storage suitability of the samples will be rated after 3 and 6 month. The collected data of the 7 field trials will be fed into the statistical software package PIAF which is not only used by all seven federal collaborators, but also by the Federal Plant Variety Office, which allows good comparability. Data will be analyzed centrally by the Agricultural chamber of commerce of Lower Saxony (Landwirtschaftskammer Niederdersachsen). Results will be made available for all collaborators immediately after statistical analysis. The gained information will be distributed via presentations and farmers’ journals, regionally after verbal agreement, but also centrally. Other federal offices that are not part of the project will also be supplied with achieved results.
