Project code: vTI-AB-08-10
Contract period: 01.01.2001 - 01.07.2012
Purpose of research: Applied research

Utilization of plants as energy sources is an important contribution to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases. Worth mentioning for Germany is only the use of biodiesel (rapeseed oil methylester). Further classical pathways for energy production from biological sources are burning of wood and straw, and production of bio-ethanol or biogas. Future fuels for combustion engines need a special composition in order to meet the more stringent regulated exhaust gas limits. An opportunity to produce such fuels is opened by the so-called Fischer-Tropsch synthesis, which enables to produce such fuels from synthesis gas (CO and H2). Synthesis gas can be generated by utilization of whole plants. Thus the farmer becomes an energy producer. In the research the potentials of different biogenic energy sources in Germany are discussed and some exemplary fuels are analysed with respect to their off-gas emissions and environmental impacts.
