Project code: 2807OE005
Contract period: 15.06.2007 - 31.12.2010
Budget: 131,971 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research

The aim of the research project is to develop and evaluate a HACCP based management and surveillance tool for the prevention of selected diseases and parasites in organic pig herds. The study will be performed in three work packages (WP's). WP1 is meant to accumulate international knowledge on organic pig production in order to select the diseases, parasite infections and the corresponding determinating parameters as well as precise actions performed in WP's 2 and 3. With these focuses, WP2 will perform an epidemiological study over a time period of 12 months on 100 farms in 6 countries in order to assess risk factors and prevalence rates for the selected diseases and parasites. The study will contain clinical parameters as well as general farm management information. Data obtained in WP2 will allow to model the surveillance tools in WP3. WP3 will set up HACCP based plans for the surveillance of defined parameters. Divided in three subtasks, plans will focus on the specific health and welfare problems: - Control of parasites; - Control of piglet mortality and weaning diarrhoea; - Sow reproduction problems. The HACCP plans will be implemented on 32 farms in four of the participating countries and in order to evaluate taken measures the farms will be attended over a time period of ten months.
