Extension of organic farming in Germany: Determination of reasons for re-conversion of organic farms to conventional agriculture and development of a sustainable approach to prevent it

Project

Project code: 2808OE117
Contract period: 01.09.2010 - 30.11.2012
Budget: 151,700 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research

The project aims at understanding the relevance of the 'phenomenon re-conversion' in Germany. Subjective reasons of farmers who returned to conventional cultivation shall be determined and contrasted with objective data regarding the external environment of re-conversion. Based on these data, measurements how to reduce the number of re-conversions shall be developed in collaboration with relevant players (e.g. from consulting services, agricultural administration, trade and processing companies, organic associations). At the outset, explorative interviews with experts regarding re-conversion and an analysis of the quantitative amount of re-conversions and their regional distribution will be conducted. By means of in-depth interviews with farmers who re-converted, reasons for a return to conventional cultivation will be investigated. The interviews will be supplemented with an analysis of the objective backgrounds in the respective regions (e.g. amount of area-based subsidies for organic production, organic price premiums, sales conditions for organic products).
