Model development and testing of a new breeding program for the race Murnau-rock on the basis of molecular genetic characterization
Project
Project code: 2805BM015
Contract period: 01.06.2006
- 29.02.2008
Budget: 20,240 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
The indigenous cattle breed bavarian is ideal for wet locations with the use of harsh climate, high rainfall and steep pastures adapted. The milk from Murnau-Werdenfels has a very good cheese making. Among the genetic variants of milk proteins has the greatest diversity of the breed all the studied breeds exhibit in Germany. Murnau Werdenfelser have by far the highest frequency is unique for beta-lactoglobulin D. The occurrence of beta-lactoglobulin W, named after Werdenfelser. In 2004, 154 purebred cows Murnau Werdenfelser milk recording and connected to race in the risk category 'ECA' classified. In addition to the small population, the issue of race is that only three blood lines are present. In addition, the conservation of this indigenous breed called into question by cross-breeding the French Tarentaise cattle breed. In this first project is to the genetic diversity of the breed with Microsatelitten compared to neighboring populations and genetically distant breeds are judged. Based on the phylogenetic results of a breeding program should be developed to preserve the Murnau Werdenfelser. It should also be examined, with what - if closely related populations - can be worked in order to avoid inbreeding depression. In addition, we will show a model, as the existing gene pool can be expanded with other breeds in other countries too sensitively as possible.
