Project code: 2808OE180
Contract period: 01.11.2009 - 31.12.2011
Budget: 122,199 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research

The first goal of the research project is therefore to examine the prevalence of diarrheal pathogens in piglets in organic production sow farms. The occurrence of E. coli pathovars in differential diagnosis, differentiation from other organisms should be present in the foreground. In addition to possible additional risk factors in terms of housing conditions and the hygiene management are recorded on the farms. the results will help to strengthen the disease prevention through environmental improvement and the effectiveness of vaccination in organic farms. The University of Kassel, working together with the State Office Hessian National Laboratory (Department of Veterinary Medicine) in 20 ecologically managed sow farms that diarrhea in piglets using fecal swab sampling in terms of infectious agents ETEC and other Differentials related diarrheal pathogens and hygiene management and treatment data on the plants over a period of one year record. The fecal swabs are subjected in a first step in a cultural and bacteriological investigation. Case of detection of Escherichia coli as etiologic agent should these isolates by means of the polymerase chain reaction to different virulence factor genes are investigated.
