Project code: 2808HS020
Contract period: 18.05.2009 - 31.12.2011
Budget: 202,475 Euro
Purpose of research: Basic research

The Branch Office of Epidemiology will investigate the basis of longitudinal studies in different piglet producing farms in Germany, the infection dynamics and the time history of colonization with MRSA in breeding pigs (sows, search or Deckeber) and for piglets. Here are risk factors identified for colonization and fighting and control measures designed to contribute to a steady reduction in MRSA prevalence in the pig population. In the first step in different piglet producing farms in Germany measured the current intra-herd prevalence based on animal and environmental samples (Querschnitssstudie). Pig herd with a high prevalence and longitudinal studies are included in the analyzes based on a questionnaire about possible risk factors for MRSA. In the first reproductive cycle nasal and vaginal smears and environmental samples from sows and piglets derived therefrom as well as the surrounding MRSA samples at specified intervals to be examined repeatedly. After evaluating the results of the questionnaires and microbiological investigations for each stock and special-fighting control measures are developed and applied. The success of each of the measures applied are measured in a second reproductive cycle. Suitable (MRSA-positive and-negative MRSA) stocks are efficiently used in the joint project together. The results obtained in the study of MRSA isolates to be preserved and BfR for further research are made available. All results will be incorporated into the development of specific MRSA reduction and control plans and serve as the basis for the German and European legislation.
