Production processes

Project code: vTI-BD-08-42
Contract period: 01.01.2013 - 31.12.2015
Purpose of research: Applied research

The objectives of DIVERSYMASS are to optimise the economic, agronomic, environmental and societal benefits of multifunctional biomass production under land conditions where cost-effective intensive production with existing cultivation techniques is not possible under given environmental or macro-economic conditions. A diversification of the cropping system will help to optimise yield, yield stability and resilience, biomass quality, abiotic stress tolerance, resource-use efficiency (N and water), functional biodiversity including provision of ecosystem services. This will include improving production of biomass on-site through diversification of both annual and perennial cropping systems adapted to marginal land conditions. And furthermore, to provide recommendations for sustainable and cost efficient (low-input) multifunctional biomass cropping systems (annual and perennial) on marginal land that are adapted to the challenges linked with the transition to a bio-based economy, land use change and climate change.
