Purpose of research: Basic research

Testing the validity of cropland models for climate change impact requires consistent data sets for model input and various biogeochemical state variables for comparison with model outputs. Although cropping systems are the main focus of this model-intercomparison, soil-crop-atmosphere interactions like soil water, carbon and nitrogen dynamics should be considered as far as possible too to investigate model results also for other biogeochemical issues and environmental risk assessment. The first task (C1.1) performs an inventory of available models within MACSUR, identifies similarities between models from their genealogy and collects information on relevant cropping systems in different regions of participating countries. The central aim of WP1 is to create a common protocol for model inter-comparisons (task C1.3) across a wide range of environmental conditions and management schemes and a guideline and minimum dataset requirement for data sets for model calibration and validation at different scales. A scheme to classify data sets depending on their data quality and consistency to be used for calibration or validation will be set up (task C1.2). The guidelines will be the basis for WP2 for gathering consistent experimental data sets from different countries across Europe and to design new model guided experimental trials. A methodological framework will be developed and applied for multi-criteria model evaluation (task C1.4). An inter-comparison of selected models will be performed in uncalibrated and calibrated model runs and results (task C1.5) will be used to identify model gaps and deficits for model improvement. They will also be a basis to assess model uncertainty in WP4 and define minimum data requirements for scaling case studies in WP3 and for regional case studies performed under WP6. The results can be also used by WP5 showing differences in model structures and behavior, demonstrating model output variability and show options for climate change adaptation of cropping systems.
