Satellite based monitoring of forest development as basis for simplification of terrestrial inventory methods
Project
Project code: BFH-I-02-3.10
Contract period: 01.01.2004
- 31.12.2005
Purpose of research: Applied research
Objective of the processing of high-resolution images of the satellite quickbird 2 is the elaboration of geographically referenced and actual database for planning sustainable forest management of forest plantations in Malaysia, Brazil, and of a natural forest reserve in Brazil. On the basis of interpreted digital data where spatial and biological information is extracted, forest management, esp. replanting, silvicultural operations, harvesting and road construction can be planned. Further, the precision of growth and yield data is substantially enhanced through extrapolation of point sampled reference plots to compartment and stand levels. Thus, forest management can optimized inputs and maximize profits. Especially, time-consuming and cost-intensive field work for repeated inventories can be drastically reduced.
