Project code: 2814700611
Contract period: 01.07.2012 - 30.06.2015
Budget: 155,073 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development

A. cochlioides is one of the most important pathogens in sugar beet worldwide and causes an acute seedling damping-off and a chronic root rot resulting in severe yield and quality losses. To reduce the use of fungicides for disease control in the future, it is necessary to identify resistance factors in sugar beet and develop molecular markers for more efficient and specific breeding. To accomplish this, bioassays were developed to enable the reliable resistance evaluation of different sugar beet lines regarding the acute seedling damping-off as well as the chronic root rot. Furthermore, specific resistance factors were identified by the analysis of differentially expressed genes of resistant and susceptible genotypes. Identified genes that showed similarities to known resistance factors were subjected to qPCR analysis to study their role in the plant resistance response in more detail. For the development of molecular markers, a segregating population was established and analyzed in the greenhouse. The QTL-mapping allowed the identification of two different QTLs, one specific for damping-off resistance and the other one specific for chronic root rot resistance.
