Analysis of the demand for wood products in the construction industry
Project
Project code: TI-FO-08-3.24
Contract period: 01.09.2012
- 31.12.2014
Purpose of research: Inventory & Assessment
The material use of wood is of significant importance with regard to both the storage of CO2 and the substitution of other goods and its related value added. An increase in the use of wood is also major objective of the 'Wood Charter', initiated by the German Government in 2004. The per capita consumption of wood and wood based products from sustainable production shall increase in Germany by 20 percent within ten years. According to current knowledge this goal seems almost to be fulfilled. However, the increase is mainly based on the growth of of wood energy whereas the increase in the material use of wood is well below the 20 percent target.
A key sector for the material use of wood and wood products is the construction industry. Actually, an analysis on the use of wood and wood products in the construction industry is carried out (by external partners and supervised by the Thünen Institute of Forest Economics). The study aims to provide information on the development of consumption of wood products in the construction industry. In addition to this study, the project also focuses on how changes in prices of selected wood based products affect the demand for relevant substitute goods. To do so, cross-price elasticities of substitute goods in the construction industry will be determined, assumed a given demand for the building products in question. The interactions within product groups of equal functional units are considered (e. g. wooden windows, plastic windows). The results of these analyses will provide important references for the implementation of the objectives of the 'Wood Charter'.
