Project code: vTI-BW-08-124
Contract period: 01.02.2008 - 30.09.2009
Purpose of research: Applied research

Rye has turned out to be a grain species with a big potential on light and medium soils. Through marketing channels like bioethanol and biogas as well as the increasing acceptance of rye as a feed component it could probably develop into a more popular market crop in the future. The aim of the project is to analyze profitability of rye production under changing framework conditions in the rye growing belt, ranging from the North German Plain to the Ural Mountains. To determine the economics of rye, together with agri benchmark partners a network of typical rye producing farms in important rye growing regions of Germany, Poland, Scandinavia, the Baltic States, Ukraine and Russia should be established. Based on the typical farm data it is then in second step possible to analyze the competitiveness of rye under changing framework conditions like changing price relations, innovative technology or new varieties.
