Project code: 2811OE116, TI-BW-08-PID1429
Contract period: 01.03.2013 - 28.02.2018
Budget: 264,612 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research

The demand for organically produced products in Germany has increased in recent years. This trend is however not fully reflected in the development of domestic production. Instead, the share of imported products in the German organic market has risen over the last years. In order to better exploit the market potential of organic production in Germany, more information on its international competitiveness and based on this adequate strategies are needed to improve the competitiveness. Against this background, this project aims to analyse the international competitiveness of the German organic grain, oil seeds and grain legume production with selected competitive countries and to develop strategies for practice and agricultural policy for an expansion of production in Germany. The following working steps are planned: 1) description of the farm, production and trade structures in Germany and in Brazil, Italy, Canada, Kazakhstan, Lithuania, Rumania and the Ukraine; 2) a survey to collect information and data from typical farms in the study countries; 3) comparison of the production costs; 4) a weak-point analysis of production in Germany; 5) feedback on the project results from organic farmers, traders and advisors in the framework of a workshop, and 6) the derivation of policy recommendations. The results shall be used to 1) provide enterprises at various levels of the value creation chain with more planning certainty; 2) to demonstrate for these enterprises how they can make the organic production of grains, oilseeds and grain legumes more profitable, and 3) to provide political and government decision-makers with information on the international comparison to improve the current framework conditions.
