Integrated control of cabbage whitefly in vegetables cabbage

Project

Project code: 2812NA020, JKI-GF-08-1158
Contract period: 01.06.2013 - 31.12.2016
Budget: 72,647 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research

This three years project is aimed to develop an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy to control the cabbage whitefly Aleyrodes proletella Linnaeus (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) in integrated and organic production. For several years, A. proletella has become an important pest in the production of Brussels sprouts, kale, kohlrabi, savoy and to a minor extend in other vegetable brassica crops in Germany. It currently causes severe problems with the plants' quality. The reason for the increase in whitefly population development in recent years is not fully clear. By means of a questionnaire the regional impact of A. proletella will be investigated as well as the proportion of overwintering habitats in production areas. Trials in climate chambers serve to investigate the development of A. proletella under different climatic conditions. To develop an IPM strategy, a combination of different tools will be investigated within the frame of a joint research project. In this project a suitable sampling scheme will be developed first. Additionally, several alternative methods will be proved to control A. proletella in the field. Working packages: a) Investigations on the reasons for the population increase of A. proletella which includes the identification of changes in the agricultural practice concerning the proportion of overwintering habitats in vegetable production areas and trials in climate chambers to investigate changes in the life cycle considering different climate models; b) Development of a reliable sampling scheme; c) Field trials to investigate the impact of whitefly infestation on yield quantity and quality; d) Field trials to investigate different elements for an IPM strategy including the determination of an action threshold for insecticide use, testing preselected Brussels sprouts cultivars for resistance and testing preselected undersowings and trap crops for their effect to prevent whiteflies from invading the crop.
