Contract period: 01.07.2005 - 30.11.2008
Budget: 140,660 Euro
Purpose of research: Basic research

HeDiPig was established to elucidate the aetiology of hereditary diseases in the pig by integrating structural and functional genomics. Inherited disorders significantly affect health and welfare in pig breeding populations. Above that, these disorders lead to fundamental economic losses in the pig industry due to increased mortality and limitation of selection intensity on other important economic traits. HeDiPig focuses on three inherited diseases of major importance with regard to these aspects and significant incidences in actual breeding populations: anal atresia, splay leg and inverted teats. The project aims at the identification and characterisation of genes controlling the expression of the diseases in order to deliver a reliable DNA-based selection tool. The final goal is to develop direct tests for marker-assisted selection to reduce the incidence of the inherited disorders and to finally eradicate them.
