Project code: TI-AT-08-04050
Contract period: 01.04.2013 - 30.04.2015
Purpose of research: Applied research

Diesel fuel R33 is a biodiesel fuel that is composed of 33 % of biogenic fuel and a premium-quality diesel fuel (67 %). The biogenic part consists of 7 % biodiesel that is derived from used cooking oil and 26 % of HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil from used cooking oil, rapeseed oil and palm oil). By means of a certification system according to the Renewable Energy Directive of the European Union (GUIDELINE 2009/28/EG) and the German Biofuels Sustainability Act (Biokraftstoff-Nachhaltigkeitsverordnung, BIOKRAFT-NACHV, 2009) it is guaranteed that the biogenic materials originate from sustainable cultivation. We expect a reduced emission of harmful engine exhaust gases – which would suggest an application of R33 particularly in inner-city traffic – and, through an extended oil change interval, some savings of engine lubricating oil. The R33 fuel meets the requirements of the diesel fuel standard DIN EN 590 and the German 10th BImSchV. This will be monitored by independent laboratories. Thus R33 diesel fuel complies with all regulated fuel parameters and the warranty conditions of the automotive manufacturers are fulfilled. During two years, the biofuel will be road-tested in a fleet test. The task of the Thünen Institute of Agricultural Technology consists in the measurement of health-relevant exhaust gas components at the beginning and the end of the project, where conventional diesel fuel is taken as reference each. The following parameters are determined: - Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) - Carbonyls (aldehydes and ketones) - Particle size distribution The measurements will be carried out on a chassis dynamometer of the Volkswagen AG.
