Collaborative project: A Smart breeding approach for high yielding hybrid rye varieties with optimized allocation of dry matter to the grain - subproject 2 (OPTIMALL)

Project

Project code: 2814IP002
Contract period: 01.10.2013 - 15.06.2017
Budget: 58,891 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research

OPTIMALL aims to bred a new type of rye hybrids with genetically detremined plant height by transferring a dominant dwarfing gene from a non-adapted genetic resource into elite germplasm from two German hybrid rye breeding programs. This optimization of the harvest index will increase the yield potential of rye under changing climate conditions. Homozygous dwarf inbred lines and their near isogenic tall full sibs will be crossed to male-sterile testers and assessed in multilocal field trials with respect to their test-cross performance in grain yield. A SMART breeding approach will be applied to introgress the dwarfing gene in the seed-parent pool, which subsequently allows for a comprehensive evaluation to identify superior semi-dwarf hybrid combinations. A combined approach of comparative genetics as well as de novo sequencing in rye will be used to establish a high resolution map of the dwarfing gene. Closely linked markers will be used to select individuals with recombinant haplotypes and to remove genes originating from the un-adapted genetgic resource, which are linked to the dwarfing gene and which have a negative influence on yield.
