Collaborative project: Innovative potentials to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in dairy cows to generate added value in milk production (INNO Mil-CH4) – Subproject 3
Project
Project code: 2817501011
Contract period: 15.12.2013
- 14.03.2017
Budget: 165,069 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
The consortium aims at establishing innovative milk production systems, which contribute to a mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions from milk production across the whole dairy supply chain. The objective is to identify key impact factors for greenhouse gas emissions in the dairy supply chain and optimize production systems to effectively reduce greenhouse gas emissions over the whole supply chain. Therefore, we will explore and validate the feasibility and robustness of fatty acid composition in milk fat as an indicator for in vivo methane production by correlating milk fatty acid composition with in vivo methane production in dairy cows under different feeding conditions known to affect methane emissions. As a result recommendations for methane reducing feed rations will be developed and tested on farms. These will be related to other possible greenhouse gas mitigation options in the dairy supply chain to identify the most effective and efficient greenhouse gas mitigation options in dairy production.
