Collaborative project: Development of a practicable process for phosphor elimination from recirculation aquaculture system effluents - subproject 3

Project

Project code: 2817501911
Contract period: 01.11.2013 - 31.10.2015
Budget: 10,200 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research

To increase aquaculture production, especially of highly demanded fish species, recirculation aquaculture systems (RAS) are of gaining interest. In operation these systems can emit phosphor (P) concentrations of approx 2 - 30 mg*l-1 by their discharge water. The aim of the present study is to develop and test a module for P elimination from RAS effluent waters. To allow a broad and easy applicabilty among practical conditions the approved principle of chemical-physical phosphor elimination shall be adapted to the conditions in RAS. To achive this aim a company with experience in design and construction of intensive fish farms and water purification systems cooperates with two institutes for applied fisheries research. The targeted equipment has to be a compact, modular construction to be integrated in (existing) RAS wich often offer only limited space. Comparable low through flow volumes with mean to high phosphor concentrations have to be managed efficiently. In a first step phosphor precipitation/flocculation batch experiments are conducted among laboratory conditions. Basing on the results a mdule for P elimination from RAS effluent water will be constructed and tested at a commercial scale.
