Investigation of belowground biomass of forest trees to improve the greenhouse gas reporting in Germany (Wurzelbiomasse)

Project

Project code: 28WB403401
Contract period: 01.01.2014 - 31.12.2016
Budget: 357,357 Euro
Purpose of research: Inventory & Assessment

The main task is to develop biomass functions for the root mass of individual trees of oak and birch. Further-more, the Germany-wide validity of a previously developed biomass function for the Brandenburg pine is to be secured. This biomass functions should help to determine accurately the belowground biomass and thus the carbon stock in roots. Roots from 40 to 50 trees of each species of oak, birch and pine with a largest possible DBH-margin are to be excavated and examined for this project. For the determination of above and belowground biomass the sample trees will be pulled down and measured. Functions should be derived from the collected data to calculate the belowground biomass. The developed biomass functions will provide more precise values, which should be available for the National Inventory Report (NIR) 2017 and thus contribute to improving the greenhouse gas reporting. The results will be published in the Emission Factors Database (EFDB) of the IPCC. Additionally conclusions about root growth and soil structure under various climatic and site conditions shall be drawn.
