Collaborative project: Breeding of resistant rapeseed against Verticillium longisporum by use of recessive resistance, Sub-project 2

Project

Project code: 2814IP005
Contract period: 01.01.2014 - 30.04.2017
Budget: 44,502 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research

Verticillium longisporum is an important rapeseed (Brassica napus) pathogen. In the course of a research project, the applicants have successfully identified several plant susceptibility factor genes, which can be directly used for rapeseed V. longisporum - resistance breeding. The project VertiRes aims to identification and knockout of the potential susceptibility factors in the rapeseed genome to generate new rapeseed genotypes with increased resistance to V. longisporum infection. In the course of the VertiRes-project TILLING- mutants with respective genes will be identified. This will be achieved either by use of conventional TILLING-reaction protocols or by Next-Generation-Sequencing technology. Due to the loss of function of the susceptibility factors in plants, resistance/reduced susceptibility of the mutants are expected. Thus, the project provides a novel strategy for genomic-assisted rapeseed resistance breeding, and also will greatly contribute to widening the genetic diversity of B. napus. The identified mutant lines will be directly used for resistance breeding program.
