Collaborative project: Identification of closely linked markers for wheat leaf and stripe rust resistance genes and virulence monitoring in open land populations of wheat leaf and stripe rusts - subproject 2 (IdMaRo)
Project
Project code: 2814602513
Contract period: 01.08.2014
- 31.07.2018
Budget: 255,804 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development
Leaf rust and yellow rust are among the most important leaf pathogens in wheat and can cause high yield losses. In the IdMaRo project, molecular markers for various leaf and yellow rust resistance genes were developed and validated. The virulence against the tested resistance genes of the nationwide leaf- and yellow rust populations was shown at six locations. These findings help to harness the new resistance genes, including those from wild species, which are not present in the current breeding material. Effective resistance genes were identified, pyramidized in double haploid lines and thus introduced into current wheat breeding programs. The developed molecular markers and wheat genotypes are used in wheat breeding programs and thus accelerate the improvement of resistance to leaf and yellow rust in the German winter wheat breeding material.
